NWHCA Spring Meeting 2010

All through Eastern Washington once we left Walla Walla there was nothing but green gentle rolling hills.

This cross looks bigger in person. It was high up on the rocks as you drove into one side of Colfax (there was only two ways into the town).

This was where our meeting was at Maple K Farms outside of Colfax, Washington. This homestead has been in the same family since 1930'S. It was the most organized place we have ever seen. Even the "Junk" was organized and hidden from the road view. Going into every paddock and pasture your would find a curry comb in a holder in case any one had the urge to brush the Highlanders. And there were plenty here and at the other pastures!

One of the things that we were shown how to do is start a calf with halter breaking, then leading, and finally how to show a calf. Aaron and I walked away from this day with most of our questions answered and so much more interested in this unique breed of cattle and people that raise them. Can't wait until next years spring meeting. Maybe one day Aaron and I will be able to host one here at our place.

A few of went on the farm tour to see three of the four pastures that Maple K uses as summer pasture around Colfax. It was so neat to hear Tom whistle and hear/see the cows coming to see what, if any, treats he may have for them.

One of many old barns we seen along the way. Lots were restored but a few weren't. But almost all of them were built in this same style and had dates of when they were built on them. Most were before 1920's.

Rattlesnake Grade between Lewiston, Idaho and Enterprise, Oregon. Corners just kept coming... and coming....
