WHAT AN AWESOME EVENT TO TAKE PART IN!!!! If you have never participated in this event or visited one, we strongly suggest that you do. Our relay started at 6:45pm on Friday with opening ceremonies and then the survivors lap. Then from there each team was introduced as they started their first lap. We were number 12 of 45 teams from Baker, Haines and North Powder. We used the high school track. The center of the track was literally a "tent city". Each team had a camp spot that is decorated with a theme of their choice then behind that is the team members tents to sleep in. The Boys' loved just walking around the track when it first started. There was a lot of their friends from school walking too. Aaron even walked a lap of two also and he didn't even have to. My parents surprised us by coming to the opening ceremonies to cheer our teams on.That was real neat of them to support us like this. As I am typing this I am realizing that I can't even put into words about the luminaries, peoples spirits, the bonds you make while walking with the teams. Now this was all still during the daylight hours. Our second shift to walk was 1:am - 3:am. Thanks to my car and my mishap I didn't feel much like staying over night at camp so Aaron bless his heart drove the Boys' and I back into town to walk. The minute you step onto that track with the luminars lite it brings tears to ones eyes and tugs at your heart strings. The flickering of at least over 5000 white bags that are decorated for love ones that are lost or loved ones that have beat cancer is so overwhelming. Then to see so many people still functioning at such an early hour with no rest is amazing. This morning the event was over at 8:am and would be totally surprised if anyone from our team isn't taking a nap right now (except me obviously). Cancer doesn't sleep is why we do this fundraiser at night. Our teams goal this year & it is our first year ever doing this was to raise $1,000. We raised over $1800. The Relay in Baker was hoping to raise $75,000. There were teams that had been raising money all year long. So teams were so creative in their money making ideas. Next year Sterling will be a little more prepared for the event.
